God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Car Marketing
What is Wrong with Us?
By Lu Su

Here are some of the headlines in yesterday’s local newspaper:

Gunman kills eight in Nebraska mall
GPS anklets prevent new sex crimes
Doctor’s extortion lawsuit dismissed
Cardinal assaulted over abuse scandal
Israel may feel need to hit Iran
DPW worker charged with on-the-job theft
Colorado settles suits alleging sexual assault
Divorce may have environmental costs

Why do we have problems like this? What is wrong with us? What is the matter with people? Can all this be explained away by an unpleasant childhood?

As a toy salesman, I have encountered numerous buyers who believe that this world would be a less violent place if we could only rid ourselves of toy guns and violent video games. I do not prescribe to this theory. Even just a brief glance at past civilizations show they were fully capable of performing evil without the need of toy guns or game controllers. How long has problems like murder, assault, theft, and divorce been plaguing mankind?

It seems to me that if we were able to figure out the root cause of this problem plaguing mankind, we would be in a much better position to address the problem. Sounds like a reasonable argument right? Doctors with a proper diagnosis are better able to formulate a cure. Engineers and technicians that troubleshoot the problem correctly are far more likely to fix the problem. Marketing people who know their product/service are more likely to come up with an effective marketing strategy. Mothers who figure out the root cause of the problem that causes their child to throw a tantrum are more adept in preventing another.

Our culture as well as many others spend vast amount of resources in addressing the symptoms of whatever is plaguing man. I do not know what the figure is, but I bet the amount of money we spend alone on prisons and all the trimming to properly run them, is probably a big number. I wonder how much investment is made each year in researching out the root cause of the problem. Addressing the problem after it has erupted is a bigger challenge; and whatever prescription is applied is far less likely to have good results. Nip it in the bud and an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure, are two clichés that come to mind. I think every parent understands this concept. I think every US citizen understands this concept -as Pandora’s Box has opened.

Back to the question -What is wrong with us?

Cultures whom attempt to answer this question without including God, will never quite diagnose the problem correctly. I have heard many modern cultures claim that problem with man stems from ignorance; so education is the solution to the problem? Many of the people who made the above headlines are better educated than most of the world’s population. German and Japanese citizens were one of the most educated peoples on earth during the start of a great war.

In many Western cultures, what is wrong with man is attributed to some type of sickness –so some type of medication or rehabilitation is required. In many Eastern cultures, the root cause of the problem is man’s passions; so the prescription is to live a life devoid of passion. I question this type of thinking. Without passion, yes a lot of evil would not occur, but a lot of good would never occur either. I know this sounds a bit radical, but perhaps a more effective strategy than purging passion out of our lives is to purge our eyes. How many of the above headlines would never have become a headline if all those involved were physically blind? Hum, I do not care for that solution either –I like seeing things.

What the God of the scriptures says is wrong with man is something called sin (hey look, we didn’t even need to spend a penny on research).Sin by its very nature is destructive. When sin enters your marriage, your marriage falls apart. When sin enters an organization, the organization becomes corrupt. When sin enters a gunman’s life, innocent people die. Sin at its core is destructive and always results in death of something. When sin entered our life, death entered our relationship with our Maker.

So now that we know the root cause, what can we do to stop this destruction behavior? What can we do to restore relationship? Unfortunately, man does not appear to have the skill set in tackling the root cause of the problem; all we seem capable of doing is to address the symptoms. Fortunately for some of us, God stepped in.

Isaiah 9:6 says:
Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Notice how relationship oriented all those titles are. Notice the prophet’s insight. Here, “child” and “son” refer to the same person and yet Isaiah makes a distinction in the word structure here. It would have been easier to say “Unto us a child/son is born”. But God being eternal cannot be born or come into being –he has always existed. So the child is born (the Word became flesh) and the son is given.

Just a thought as Christmas approaches.
