Recalls and ties to our environment
by Lu Su

Product recalls keep marching on. About a month or two ago the recalls were centered on pet food. Then I think the media attention shifted quickly to dangerous toothpaste. A recall on car tires hit the airways for a couple of days. But we seem to be dwelling on toy recalls. Seems like every week now for the last several weeks, a new toy recall announcement from a major toy manufacturer gets mentioned. For those of you getting uncomfortable questions from customers as well as concerned individual, one of the best resources to point people to whom have questions on toy recalls is the Consumer Product Safety Commissions' (CPSC) web site. Here are two good links:

For a listing of what child and toy products that have been recalled see CPSC's web site.
http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/category/child.html
http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/category/toy.html

I spoke to one very concerned mother this week and she had expressed that with all the recalls from products made in China, that this year she was not going to take any chances and buy all her toys that were Made in the U.S.A. For those of us in the toy and diecast distribution business, you know that the chances that she can find a toy made in the US is slim to none. Like the Mastercard commercial touts, I think the look on her face the next time she walks into a toy or big box store, and starts searching for the country of origin on products, is going to be priceless.

Why don't we make toys here in American any more? No need to be so myopic on the question. Besides weapons, why don't we manufacturer anything in American anymore? Without doubt, China has become the manufacturing capital of world. It has now gotten to the point that countries/businesses/entities/people who do not engage in trade with China are purposely placing themselves at a competitive disadvantage. I'm probably going to have a heck of a time in convincing you that you need to pay more for this particular item, because I chose to have my PC assembled here in America. So now that I paid 15 times more, my overhead is more, and thus I need to charge you more.

A friend of mine made the comment that he believed that the prosperity of the US was bore on he back of the Chinese and their environment. For those who may have had the opportunity to travel to China, smog in Los Angeles is nothing compared to what smog is like in China's major cities. I was also told that the amount of copper that flows in the waters by Hong Kong every day is enough to re-plate the entire Statue of Liberty once per day. Can we complain and say that China has an unfair advantage because of lax environmental laws? Many of our rivers and streams are not condusive to swimming. Many of our rivers are not something you would want to even dip your toes into. But there is some good news. A few years ago, the government made a startling announcement that stripe bass caught in the Hudson River can now be eaten. Since the time I have known the Hudson River, eating fish out of it was always banned. But because of the PCB levels in their bodies have dropped considerably, we can now catch and eat them. But the kicker is this, the limit was a maximum of two fish (to be eaten) a few years ago. Maybe now it's up to 3 or 4 fish today. PCBs have the nasty effect of not wanting to leave your body once they enter. So it seems that we too in the strive for achieving prosperity really gave our environment a good beating too. Best let some other country mess up their environment and when we have a problem, just return it back to them.

By the way, you are all invited to a barbecue. I'm serving grilled stripe bass caught just yesterday from the Hudson River. Our government says you body is able to absorb without the toxins without any long term effects, so if you just eat one -you should be alright.
