WORTH
by Lu Su

How much is something worth?  It would see to me that business decisions could easily and more readily be made if we had a tool that determined the monetary worth of something.  Wouldn’t it be really cool to have some sort of device (i.e. wand, charm, or crystal ball) that could tell us how much a particular asset is worth?  Moreover, this would be a healthy device to have too.  Think about how many years we could add to our lives if we used the device BEFORE hiring that one particular neurotic employee or entering into that partnership with that…….person.   Everyone would want one of these devices.  Every profession would have such a need for such a tool.

I picture some sort hand held device that you could wave over the item/person in question and then a few seconds later, after it crunched some numbers, spit out a dollar figure on a little screen. Since this has now become a fantasy, let’s make it available in three assorted colors: stainless steel, silver anodized, and gold plated (so we can do what airlines do and charge different rates for virtually the same item).  It would also have a currency converter so that we could market the tool to other countries.  Humm…I wonder what number would appear on the readout if I waved it over my own head -probably some gigantic number with a little minus sign in front that number.

But back to the question, how much is something worth?  As managers and traders of tangible goods, how do we access the value of a particular asset?  Seems like this would be a handy skill to have.  Does the cost of materials, labor and distribution charges have something to do with determining its worth?  Perhaps we should look at its replacement cost?  From my point of view, these costs do NOT determine how much something is worth.  If it did, closeouts would not exist.  If we employed a Himalayan Sherpa and had him hand carry one 1/18 scale diecast model car to the top of Mount Everest and back down again, thereby greatly increasing our transportation costs on it, has the value of the car increased? Don’t get me wrong, knowing what our cost is on a particular asset helps us become better managers –by allowing us to know whether we are conducting trades at a profit or not.  But I would argue that a product's worth (value) is NOT dependent on its production and transportation costs, how much we had previously paid for it, or how many trips to Mt. Everest its made.  Seems like an odd statement to make eh?

This reminds me of the time when a physics professor gave an explanation on how we humans perceive color.  If I was listening correctly, visible light hit an object. What then occurs is that this object absorbs different spectrums of color except the one that you see.  That is why your eye perceives that a taxi cab as being yellow in color. All the other colors are absorbed, but yellow is bounced back into our eyes.  So then if you stuck this taxi cab into a cave where there was no visible light present, then obviously no absorption or reflection of light is occurring. Here the argument gets more bizarre by then saying that the taxi cab no longer is yellow in color. So let me see if I have this correct.  Stick the taxi cab into a dark cave and then the taxi cab is no longer yellow in color?  It would seem to many that the taxi cab is still yellow, regardless of whether we remembered to bring a flashlight or not. Or whether we opened by eyes or not.  Likewise, a 1/18 scale diecast car would seem to have some inherent value whether one knows or what the cost to produce it and get it into someone’s hands or not.  Again, from my point of view, how much you paid for it is NOT a good determining factor for how much something is worth.  Like color, the value of something is ALL in the mind.

In terms of the monetary value of something, I heard a good definition of worth: "What the highest bidder, that you are able to find, is willing to pay for it".   So if we do not look to our costs to evaluate worth, where do we turn for the answer?  In this world, supply and demand still best determines what something is worth.  So if the above definition is true, one practical application for us managers to pursue is find more bidders or to do something to have more bidders find you.  In general, the more bidders the higher you can charge.  He more bidders the better your understanding of supply and demand.
