Greetings!
Upon speaking
with a good friend and customer that I have known for over a decade,
I was told flat out, "Lu, your newsletters are informative,
but really really boring." The second “really”
got my attention, so I asked my friend what he thought I could
do to improve it. The suggestion given to me was to add more content
by making the newsletter more informative, give advice, and make
it more fun to read. We jousted a bit on what advice could be
given - because I do not know my customer's customers better than
they do. "General advice" was the reply. What if people
just want the facts (like before) and not the new content? "People
will automatically skip that section and find the section that
they want to read", was the reply. My friend's advice was
sincere, encouraging and difficult to argue against. So here is
my first stab at enlightening or entertaining my customers. The
topic is, “What is with the price increases on diecast cars?”
As many of
your have personally encountered, over the last couple of years
the cost of diecast model cars has steadily risen. Every shipment
we have imported has been more expensive than the previous one.
The root cause to the price escalation, especially in our industry,
is due to cost increases in the raw materials -some in plastic,
but mostly in the metal. Diecast is an alloy and the predominant
metal contained in it is zinc. Zinc prices have roller coasted
up and down, but always trending upwards. For the few of you who
have the misfortune of selling products that contain copper, you
already are acutely aware of the unprecedented price increases
in that particular metal. Other contributing factors are labor
and transportation costs also edging upwards. Gas prices below
$2.00/gallon seems like a distant dream now. And just yesterday,
I paid over $4.00 for a gallon of milk. So it looks like we are
being accosted on two fronts, raw material increase and the cost
increase from simply moving goods from point A to point B. So
the next logical question is what is causing metals like zinc
and copper to skyrocket in price?
For those
of you who may have had the opportunity to visit China or India
(or know someone who did), one inescapable sight is the pollution
and number of construction projects going on in every city, town,
and countryside. Construction cranes and booms fill the skyline
in those countries. To put it in perspective, take all the buildings,
skyscrapers, houses, roads, sewers, tunnels, and streets in Philadelphia,
PA and its closest suburbs. China builds that in one month’s
time! What is even more amazing is that China has been doing that
for the last few years. That is an interesting fact, but what
does a new high rise going up on Shanghai China have to do with
the prices of diecast cars going up? Both zinc and copper are
metals used in the making building supplies. Zinc is a common
metal used in many alloys. Zinc is also used in galvanizing building
materials to retard rust (i.e. galvanized bolts, nuts, screws,
fences, girders, signs, poles, etc…). So what are the short
and long term ramifications of this? A topic of conversation for
another day.
